Laizi is resident at Way Back Here, a night of “4/4 culture” at London’s Dance Tunnel. Every month he’s also on NTS Radio with fellow WBH founders Shango and Anthony Mooney. When we first met him he seemed like a standard Essex boy, but we gave him a gig anyway alongside Untold, Falty DL and XXXY. Please think of us, Luke, when you’re playing on a boat/running a festival in Bulgaria/whatever.

Anyway Laizi soon showed us, and not before time we’re finally pleased to present his Wifey mix. Whether you’re familiar with some of these records or not, you won’t have heard them played exactly like this. Luke’s one of those DJs who makes the ones you’ve never heard sound like obvious partners to the ones you know- and the tunes you thought you knew sound more exciting than you remembered. The start is deceptively smooth btw be careful midway not to start spontaneous daytime raving.

Pumping new mix from Checan

As some of you might remember, Wifey started life back in 2008 as a bassline and niche night. At the time we felt few people in London were showcasing this vital music, which was coming out of the North especially but with outposts across the UK. Marking five years since then, we’re proud present a slice of bassline history from Sheffield native Checan.

Now based in London, you might know Checan through his Bunga Bunga parties and his hybrid, bassline-influenced productions for Unknown To The Unknown. Still in his early 20s he’s no veteran of the scene, but his knowledge of the genre and passion for it shine through in this mix for us. As well as a personal run-down of some classics, listen out for exclusives sneaked in there from the man himself.

Elgato is best known for his work on Hessle Audio, as one of the shadowy but exceptionally talented producers the label has a knack for discovering. Recently he launched his own, eponymously named label, adding the ‘Dunkel Jam’ 12″ to his minimal but perfectly formed discography. The reason we’ve asked him to play is that he’s also a superb DJ, with an enviable collection of US and UK garage. He’s proved it from his days running Bruk, a small but influential club night in Bristol, through to his continuing transmissions on Sub FM. One recent, convincing demonstration is his 2011 mix for Little White Earbuds (http://bit.ly/z73p0S). Come down and see why this man has long been one of Ben UFO’s favourite selectors.

In March last year we invited Gerv from LV to debut his Okzharp project at Wifey. Mining a rich vein of lo-fi South African house and chopping it up with UK Funky, the results were blindingly enjoyable. So when we tipped him in FACT’s ‘Ones To Watch in 2013′ feature, we vowed to get him back in the booth as soon as the sun came back. We couldn’t be happier to make good on our promise finally. Since then Gerv and LV have gone from strength to strength, with the group finding wide acclaim for their Sebenza album and its transformation of SA influences. We’re looking forward to hearing how the Okzharp concept has developed, but until then you can still hear his amazing Wifey mix on our Mixcloud (http://bit.ly/GQBf09).

Our latest mix comes all the way from Georgia, USA courtesy of Cc, also known as C Powers. Having spent time in Chicago and London, Chris now holds it down in the Southern states as a resident at Atlanta’s Hunger club night and Savannah’s Safe // Sound.

Chris’s mix features local associates such as Featureless Ghost, Alex Falk and Night Slugs’ Helix, alongside the likes of Levon Vincent, Shake and Chris Mitchell. Live and spontaneously tweaked, it reminds us of his own productions: jammed out in pursuit of a vibe, but with the attention to detail to keep you locked in.

Speaking of which, Chris’s Up Wind EP for Jass has been in our boxes for a couple of years, while his unreleased track ‘Half Day Road’ featured on our Dummy mix in November. You can hear another exclusive here, “Electric Slide”, and those inclined to dig around might want to check his collaborations on Triple You Tapes as Mane Mane and Shrur.

Chris is also the only person we know of to make a track where the acid comes in at 3:03, which almost makes him worthy of your attention by itself.

We hope we don’t have to tell you that Ralph Cumbers AKA Bass Clef is one of the most inspired, bloody-minded producers out there. He started off messing with the fringes of dubstep, with the help of a four-track tape machine and a trombone. Recently he’s branched out into psychedelic, Chicago-inspired tracks (on last year’s album Reeling Skullways) and primitivist pulse electronics as Some Truths.

What not so many people know is that Ralph’s a serious DJ, although if you were at Wifey in July last year you’ll have heard the proof. So we’re very happy to welcome him to our mix series with a set entitled ‘Grime Fairy Tales’. This is not some Ableton guy learning Serato, but an all-vinyl and drum machine collage of Ralph’s favourite riddims. His use here of repeats and reprises mirror MC Agent Dale Cooper’s increasingly disorientated vocals. While the track list alone should have people hitting the download button, it sounds even better than it looks.

The Waiting Room, 175 Stoke Newington High Street, London N16 0LH (underneath the Three Crowns)

Tickets available from Resident Advisor – £4

We spent half of last year wanting to get Randomer down to Wifey without managing to do so, so we’re hyped to have him play for us at The Waiting Room. Our eagerness began at Dimensions Festival where he crafted a visceral, hard-hitting set, showcasing a distinctive range of genres and styles. The same approach has marked Randomer’s production with equally exciting results. Over the past 18 months he has delivered strong singles on Hemlock and Numbers, drawing on techno, grime, funky, garage and ghetto house, but never sounding derivative.

Lee Gamble made one of last year’s most welcome breakthroughs, with everyone from The Wire magazine to Boiler Room getting behind his work for the PAN label. Diversions 1994-1996 and Dutch Tvashar Plumes are inspired albums – one reason being the way they blur together two sides of Lee’s history. On one hand he’s responsible for fearlessly abstract sound experiments and has worked with composers and improvisers including John Wall. But on the night we’ll be more interested in Lee’s past as a junglist – and in the kind of mutant techno and house he delved into for his FACT mix in December.

This is our first event at the Waiting Room, an intimate venue with 120 capacity and one of the best atmospheres in London.

We’re hyped to start 2013 by welcoming back Beneath to Wifey. His first ever set was at Wifey back in September 2011 and since then he’s gone from strength to strength, putting out a stellar Fact mix and a handful of massive EPs on both Keysound and his own No Symbols label. With a new single imminent for Tectonic and a few other releases in the pipeline, 2013 looks set to be a big year. He’s gonna be playing a special 2 hour dubplate-driven set for us and it’s sure to be unmissable.

Wifey resident Robin recently launched his new label with this EP from Spatial.

Boomkat says: “Niche ‘n Bump carves out it’s place in the London sound with three specials from Spatial. The label’s closely affiliated with the much-loved Wifey club events and strongly represents their tastes for all things fresh, funky and immediate with a blend of frisky garage, up-to-the-minute tech and a timeless disco burn echoing everything from FWD to Colin Dale on Kiss and the legendary Lost nights. Big ‘un ‘The Slammer’ comes off like Jeremy Sylvester meets Shed at his fruitiest, while ‘Book Down Way Round’ gets craftier with body-carving bass swerve, percolated drums and sweetest vocal beside the duppied techno swing of ‘Plastic Relic’. Killah start, can’t wait to hear this label goes next.”

Available now on 12″ vinyl and as digital download.
